  • Battle of the Milvian Bridge
    One of the contenders for the imperial title, Constantine (later "the Great") wins a decisive and final battle at the Milvian Bridge just outside Rome, and becomes emperor.

    Roman Emperor Constantine "the Great" decrees toleration of Christianity.
  • The Rhine is bridged
    Near Köln, the eldest known bridge across the Rhine is erected.

  • Foundation of Constantinople
    Roman Emperor Constantine "the Great" moves his capital to the new city of Constantinople ("Constantine's City"), located by the old Greek city of Byzantion.

    At a Church council called by the Emperor Constantine, an assembly of Christian bishops decide to condemn Arianism as heresy, adopting instead the creed of Athanasius (the "Nicene Creed") as dogma.

  • Roman Emperor Constantine "the Great" dies
    Constantine is succeeded by his three sons Constantine II, Constantius II and Constans.

  • Battle of Aquileia
    Constantine II is killed, fighting his brother Constans. Rome once again divides into an Eastern and a Western Empire, under Constantius II and Constans, respectively.
